RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
